Tight hip flexors can be a real problem for many people. I’ve been a personal trainer for over 25 years and so many clients come to me with hip problems. Most people think that’s stretching out the hips is the best way to get rid of the pain. But I don’t think stretching is a good idea.
Stretching your hips into positions of instability can cause more injuries down the road. Stretching can force you into positions that you’re not supposed to be in. It’s not a good idea to have flexibility without stability.
The best way to increase the flexibility of your hips is to strengthen the antagonistic muscle groups. If you can increase the strength in your hamstrings your central nervous system will send a signal to release your hip flexors. Your hips flexes will automatically become more flexible. The only reason why your hips are tight is because your hamstrings are week.
Whenever the body senses weakness it will tighten up to protect the joints. Muscle tightness is secondary to muscle weakness. All tight muscles are stiff because the body is sensing a weakness. So to protect itself it tightens up. Most people think stretching is the answer but stretching will only temporarily help. To permanently increase your flexibility you really have to strengthen the whole body.
Keep in mind a strong body is a flexible body. The stronger you become the more agile and flexible you will be. Spend most of your time doing strength training and you will increase your range of motion in all your joints.
Joint mobility movement it is another great way to increase your range of motion.
